Couple coming from US to attend son’s graduation robbed

The two unidentified suspects pretended to be government officials

KARACHI:

An expatriate couple that had come from the US to attend the graduation ceremony of their son at the renowned seminary Jamia Binoria was robbed at gunpoint.

Ahmed Ali, who was to don the coveted turban along with 73 other graduates on the completion of seven-year Islamic scholar course of Darse Nizami at the Jamia Bionoria, had gone to pick his parents from the airport in the madrassa's car. Fazal Kareem and his wife were guests of Jamia Binoria.

The driver of the vehicle, Abdul Majeed, told the police that he was driving Fazal Karim, his wife and son to the Jamia from the airport when two unidentified suspects stopped them near Gharibabad pretending to be government officials. The suspects, on pretext of checking, barged into the car and grabbed Karim's wallet and his wife's handbag which contained their passports, $25,000, Rs20,000 and gold jewelry, mobile phone, US driving licence and credit cards. The suspects only returned the passports and took the rest.
