KARACHI:

The Pakistan Coast Guard set drugs worth $695 million to fire, during a ceremony held near Hasan Shah Mazar on Saturday. Distinguished guests from various walks of life including military and civil officers, the international community and artists participated in the event.

The drugs that were destroyed included 10,483 kilograms of hashish, 135 kilograms of heroin, 52 kilograms of crystal, 205 kilograms of opium, and 12 kilograms of meth ice.

Other prohibited substances, including 46,000 kilograms of betel nuts, 21,380 packets of Indian gutka, 1,203 packets of Indian naswar and 2,116 bottles of liquor, were also destroyed during the ceremony.

Director General Coast Guard Brigadier Ghulam Abbas, who was the chief guest, said in his address at the ceremony that the Coast Guard is undertaking efforts to control narcotics both on land and at sea.

He further stated that the institution faces many challenges while protecting the 1,000-kilometer long coastline, 

Singer Hasan Jahangir said that drugs are hollowing the roots of society and monitoring the activities of children has become an important need of the time.

Former Test captain and batsman Javed Miandad said that addiction of the youth to drugs is a major reason for poverty. He added that parents must keep a close eye on their children and see who they are visiting, socialising and befriending.

Miandad said that in the past, children were not allowed to leave the house at night, but nowadays, youngsters and children on the threshold of adulthood are commonly seen on the streets up to 3am.

Children fall into drug addiction due to the inattention and negligence of parents, he said.
