Leave of prisons’ officials cancelled

Punjab IG of Prisons has cancelled leave of officers and personnel of prisons across the province until further notice, says a circular issued by the Inspectorate General of Prisons on Thursday.

The circular also said that the IG of Prisons had ordered all the DIGs to visit prisons in their respective regions and inquire into the problems faced by the inmates for their immediate solutions. The decision about cancellation of leave comes in the wake of the riot that had erupted in Gujrat’s District Jail last Monday over lack of facilities.

Taking notice of the incident, the provincial IG of Prisons, Mubashir Malik, had suspended the assistant superintendent of Gujrat District’s Jail on Wednesday in the light of a preliminary inquiry. Malik had appointed the DIG of Rawalpindi Region, Saeedullah Gondal, as the inquiry officer.
