Governor establishes local govt in Punjab

11 metropolitan corporations and 40 district councils have been established

After the dissolution of the Punjab Assembly, Governor Balighur Rehman has established a new local government system under fully empowered administrators.

Eleven metropolitan corporations and 40 district councils have been established. The divisional commissioners will be administrators of Metropolitan Corporation of 11 major cities of Punjab: Lahore, Rawalpindi, Sialkot, Bahawalpur, Gujarat, DG Khan, Sargodha, Gujranwala, Multan, Sahiwal and Faisalabad. Administrators of district councils of 29 cities, including these 11 cities, will be deputy commissioners in these 29 cities: Attock, Bahawalnagar, Bhakkar, Chakwal, Chiniot, Hafizabad, Jhang, Jhelum, Kasur, Khanewal. Kot Addu, Layyah, Lodhran, Mandi Bahauddin, Mianwali, Muzaffargarh, Muree Nankana Sahab, Narowal, Okara, Pakpattan, Rahim Yar Khan, Rajanpur, Sheikhupura, Toba Tek Singh, Talagang, Taunsa Sharif, Vehari and Wazirabad.

According to the notification, all administrators will have the powers of the executive and elected members and all Union Councils will continue to work under the Local Government Act of 2013.

The secretary local government has issued a notification with the approval of the governor.
