RAWALPINDI:

With the advent of the caretaker setup in Punjab, the matter of appointment of the chairman of the District Zakat Committee, Rawalpindi and re-election of 1,166 local Zakat Committees of the Rawalpindi district has been put on the back burner.

The local Zakat Committees were dissolved after the expiry of their constitutional term and it was decided to re-elect them, but due to the dissolution of the assembly in Punjab, the issue of the establishment of new committees was put on hold.

The chairman of the District Zakat Committee, Rawalpindi also left a month ago on the expiry of his term and a new chairman of the Zakat Council could not be appointed in his place yet.

If the local Zakat Committees are not elected and the district chairman is not appointed in the next month, 10,000 deserving zakat recipients of the entire district will be deprived of the Eid gift of Rs12,000 on the eve of Eidul Fitr this year.

Zakat funds have not been released to the District Zakat Committee, Rawalpindi for the last nine months for distribution among the deserving people, therefore, no deserving could get the amount of zakat in the era of the present government.
