Lodhran steps up anti-smog campaign

Authorities issue warnings to 313 brick kilns, 136 factories

The district administration of Lodhran has ramped up its anti-smog campaign, implementing stringent measures to curb pollution and safeguard public health.

The authorities intercepted 834 smoke-emitting vehicles and issued 2,132 challans, resulting in fines totalling Rs43.7 million.

To enforce environmental protection laws, the administration inspected 816 brick kilns and 224 industrial units, issuing warning notices to 313 brick kilns and 136 industrial units for non-compliance.

As many as 53 cases were registered and 11 brick kilns were demolished for severe violations. Brick kilns were fined Rs1.4 million, while industrial units faced penalties amounting to Rs490,000.

Lodhran has earned the distinction of being the second-best district in Punjab for anti-smog operations.

Deputy Commissioner (DC) Abdul Rauf Mehr visited hospitals to meet patients suffering from asthma and respiratory issues due to smog. Over the past week, 54 asthma patients were admitted for treatment. During his visit to the District Headquarters Hospital, DC Mehr inspected the smog counter and evaluated the facilities available for those affected.

DC Mehr said medical care is being provided. The district administration has taken steps to curb crop residue burning, issuing 1,700 warning notices, registering two cases and identifying 92 violative sites.

Action has been taken against polluting brick kilns, with 11 facilities demolished for failing to adopt the eco-friendly zigzag technology mandated by the Punjab Environmental Protection Act.
