Lawyer held over ‘celebratory firing’
The District Bar Association elections in the region ended with the police registering a case against 11 lawyers and arresting one with a weapon over celebratory gunfire.
The alleged incident occurred outside a law chamber, where supporters of the winning candidates were marking their victory by firing in the air.
The police took prompt action and arrested a lawyer allegedly in possession of a 30-bore pistol.
His accomplices, who were also allegedly involved in firing in the air, fled.
The police registered a case against the suspect under several provisions and locked him up in jail.
However, the arrest of the lawyer sparked protests from dozens of other lawyers who surrounded the police station and raised slogans against the police.
Despite the protest, the police stood their ground and registered the case, handing over a copy of the FIR to the lawyers.
Efforts were made by the lawyers to get their colleague released, but the police refused to budge.
Meanwhile, a man was arrested by the police on charges of threatening to kill a woman and her daughter over a property dispute.
According to Sophia Riaz, widow of Haji Riaz Tariq and a resident of Tech Town Satyana Road, the accused, Saud Riaz, allegedly armed with a 30-bore pistol, entered her house along with an unknown accomplice.
Riaz stated that when she did not open the door, the accused broke in through a neighboring house and grabbed her by the hair while threatening to kill her and her family unless she withdrew a property case.
