RAWALPINDI:

The Rawalpindi Cantonment Board (RCB) has decided to set up a mass transfer station to increase the capacity of solid waste lifting from areas falling within its jurisdiction and to save fuel and other maintenance expenses.

According to official sources, solid waste from across the Cantt will be transported in small vehicles to the mass transfer station.

They said the proposed project would be constructed at a cost of Rs7 million at Bhatta Chowk Ground.

Once the waste goes through the process of compaction, it will be transported to the landfill site outside the Cantt.

Currently, 700 tons of solid waste from across the cant is transported in dozens of vehicles to the landfill site, 26 kilometres away on Chakri Road each day.

Due to the lack of arrangements for the safe transfer of solid waste, the waste continues to scatter on the roads across the cantonment.

The officials went on to say that in order to get out of this situation, solid waste from the collection points will be transferred to the station and later to the dumping site in big trolleys.

In this regard, bids have been invited from firms for the establishment of a mass transfer station at Bhatta Chowk ground at a cost of 7 million, they said and added that a regular contract award will be awarded in this context.

The cantonment board has also invited offers for preparing new vehicles for the transfer of solid waste.

Cantonment Executive Officer Imran Gulzar said full attention is being paid to make the Cantt clean and green.

He said that through the provision of clean drinking water, sanitation, street lights, paved streets, public parks, formation of green belts and plantations, the admin is committed to ensuring the beauty of the area.
