3.45m people to elect LG representatives in Hyd division

Some 3.45 million people of six districts of Sindh will elect their local government representatives in the upcoming second phase of the LG elections slated for January 15.
According to statistics shared by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), 6,774 candidates are contesting in the election from Hyderabad, Matiari, Jamshoro, Tando Allahyar, Tando Muhammad Khan and Dadu districts.
There are 2,551 candidates taking part in the polls from Hyderabad, 1,436 from Dadu, 839 from Jamshoro, 781 from Tando Allahyar, 715 from Matiari and 452 from Tando Muhammad Khan. Among them, 3,525 have landed in the electoral fray for the seats of general members of the wards, 1,190 for chairmen and vice chairmen of the union committees and union councils, 974 for the seats in the municipal committees and 597 for the seats in the town committees.
As many as 412 candidates have won their seats uncontested including 167 in Hyderabad, 67 each in Dadu and Tando Muhammad Khan, 38 each in Matiari and Jamshoro and 35 in Tando Allahyar. The polling on 17 seats has been postponed because of deaths of the candidates.
The ECP will set up 2,674 polling stations having a total of 8,331 polling booths manned by 28,651 polling staff. The commission has declared 779 polling stations as very sensitive and 1,895 as sensitive. There will be 732 polling stations in Hyderabad, 638 in Dadu, 430 in Jamshoro, 345 in Matiari, 299 in Tando Allahyar and 230 in Tando Muhammad Khan.
More than 50% of the stations in Jamshoro have been placed in the highly sensitive category while in comparison around 20% of the stations in Matiari and Tando Allahyar are in the same category. In Hyderabad 1,053,121 people are registered to vote. Similarly, there are 912,472 voters in Dadu, 450,033 in Jamshoro, 385,662 in Tando Allahyar, 368,589 in Matiari and 281,443 in Tando Muhammad Khan. Some 11,226 candidates had filed the nomination papers out of whom 6774 are contesting.
