'1899' cancelled after first season on Netflix

The show premiered first season on November 17 2022

It's a sad day for 1899 fans as the TV show has reportedly been cancelled by Netflix. Although the mystery-thriller just premiered its first season on November 17, 2022, its creators, Jantje Friese and Baran bo Odar have confirmed that there will be no second season for the lauded series.

Taking to Instagram, the German film screenwriter Odar also known for co-creating the Netflix series Dark with his partner Friese announced the sad news to his followers. In a post signed off with both their initials, they penned down their sentiments about the cancellation.

“With a heavy heart, we have to tell you that 1899 will not be renewed. We would have loved to finish this incredible journey with a 2nd and 3rd season as we did with Dark, but sometimes things don’t turn out the way you planned,” wrote the co-writers.

They then went on to thank their audience for being a part of their project and acknowledged their disappointment. "We know this will disappoint millions of fans out there, but we want to thank you from the bottom of our hearts for being a part of this wonderful adventure. We love you, never forget!"

Currently, Netflix has not given out any official comment on the matter.

1899 follows the story of a group of immigrants on a ship, who get caught up in a series of strange events. The people on the ship come from all walks of life with many dreams and ambitions about changing their lives abroad, but their trip takes a surprising turn once they encounter another ship drifting in the open sea.

The show starred Emily Beecham, Aneurin Barnard, Andreas Pietschmann, and Miguel Bernardeau in pivotal roles.
