LAHORE:

Sargodha Police arrested 36 more dumper drivers on Sunday on the second day of a three-day campaign against violation of traffic rules, police said. Thirty-six dumper drivers were held on Saturday, the first day of the campaign.

Police have also impounded the violators’ dumpers. These dumper drivers facing police action had allegedly violated traffic rules, and many of those drivers didn’t possess licences.

Personnel from all the police stations of the district are taking part in this operation under the leadership of DSP Naveed Murtaza. The police started the operation against dumpers after an accident three days ago in which an allegedly speedy dumper hit and killed a biker near Bhagtan Wala on Lahore Road.

The victim, Asif, 25, had died on the spot and the residents of the area had set the dumper on fire. They held a protest demonstration demanding of the police and the district administration to find a permanent solution to the problem.

After the demonstration, a special meeting was held under the chairmanship of DPO Tariq Aziz, vowing to take action against those drivers who did not have licences. Sources said that among those held, there happened to be many underage drivers who were not even eligible for a license. Most of the arrests were made in Lahore Road, Faisalabad Road, Bhalwal Road and Khushab Road. Sargodha district has thousands of dumpers that supply gravel, stone and other materials from one of Asia's largest stone crushing industry to other parts of the country.

These heavy duty dumpers are modified versions of ordinary trucks, which ferry tons of heavy stones. However, they have lately become a traffic nuisance, causing accidents due to reckless driving.
