KARACHI:

The Sindh High Court (SHC) on Saturday ordered that public announcements should be made through newspapers to remove pressure horns, tinted glasses, and fancy number plates from private vehicles.

A two-judge SHC bench, headed by Justice Nadeem Akhtar, gave these orders in a written judgment on a petition regarding the entry of heavy traffic in the city. The court also ordered the removal of illegal hooters and sirens from vehicles within seven days and sought the implementation report from the Chief Secretary who was directed to appear in person at the next hearing.

The court also ordered the DIG Traffic Police to appear on January 25.

The written order states that the DIG Traffic Police had submitted a report stating that check-posts have been set up at the entry and exit points of the city. Heavy traffic is being prevented from entering the city from 6am to 11pm, though exempted heavy vehicles still enter the city.

The DIG Traffic Police admitted that the implementation of the court decision has reduced the rate of accidents. The court sought a list of government officials and people who are allowed to use hooters and sirens on their vehicles.

The court ordered the authorities to publish advertisements in newspapers for removal of pressure horns, tinted glasses, and fancy number plates.
