Punjab Specialised Healthcare and Medical Education Secretary Dr Ahmed Javed Qazi has said that court cases are being pursued against illegal trade of human organs and legislation is also being tightened against elements involved in the illicit trade in Punjab.

He was chairing a meeting to review measures against illegal organ transplantations.

The performance of Punjab Human Organ Transplantation Authority was reviewed in detail, with its Director General Dr Shehzad Anwar delivering a briefing. Dr Ahmed Javed said that medical care and saving lives is ongoing through the Punjab Human Organ Transplantation Authority. Under the Organ Procurement Cell in Punjab, people who donate their organs during their life and after death are registered online. The public were advised to contact the helpline 1109 for guidance, should they be interested in donating.

The provincial secretary added that the Punjab Human Organ Transplantation Authority is providing services through its offices in Lahore, Multan, Rawalpindi and Faisalabad.

He directed the authority to take strict legal action against those involved in illegal organ transplantation.

Punjab Healthcare Commission CEO Saqib Aziz and other officials also participated in the meeting.
