Punjab Governor hails Urdu poets' contributions

Punjab Governor Muhammad Baligh-ur-Rehman has said that poets Saaghir Siddiqui and Perveen Shakir are assets to the Urdu literature, and their works have left indelible imprints on literature.

Speaking at the launch of a monthly literary journal’s Saaghir Siddiqui and Perveen Shakir Number at the Governor’s House in the provincial capital on Monday, he said the services of the great literary figures needed to be recognized for posterity, adding these journals would help in a better understanding of the poets for the readers.

The ceremony was held under the auspices of the Directorate of Electronic Media and Publications (DEMP), Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, in collaboration with the Department of Urdu, Government College University (GCU), Lahore. The ceremony also marked launching of translation of a book on Nizami Ganjavi, the great Azerbaijani poet, by Dr. Almas Khanam.

Azerbaijan ambassador Khazar Farhadov, the Director-General of DEMP, Imrana Wazir, the Vice Chancellor of GCU, Dr. Asghar Zaidi, the President of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences, Dr. Isa Habibbayli, writers, poets, critics and a large number of literature lovers attended the ceremony.
