City’s iconic Empress Market gets facelift

The iconic British-era Empress Market built in 1889 and named after Queen Victoria is getting a face lift.
Snorkel used for firefighting rolled in to shower powerful jets of water on the sandstone building.
Administrator Karachi Dr Saifur Rehman said on Thursday that painting and renovation work has started on the famous Empress Market.
A large number of encroachment were removed from the sides of the market to restore this historic building built in 1889 to its original form, and now there is a beautiful park around the building.
He said that colonial-era buildings are the heritage of Karachi. Steps are being taken for safety and restoration of these relics of the founding era of the city, the administrator said while reviewing the painting and renovation works on Empress Market on Thursday.
A landmark of Karachi, this building has 80 windows, four iron doors and iron bars installed all around, the clock of Empress Market will also be fixed, he said.
Saifur Rehman said that Empress Market is the heart of Karachi. Due to its location in Sadar, millions of people pass through here every day.
