‘Wednesday’ beats ‘Dahmer’ viewership record on Netflix

It is yet to beat ‘Stranger Things’ season 4 as the most popular English language series

Even after three weeks of streaming on Netflix, the Jenna Ortega-starrer Wednesday tops the streamer’s latest viewership rankings, beating even the highly anticipated royal documentary, Harry & Meghan, and crime show, Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story.

According to Variety, Tim Burton’s Addams Family offshoot officially became the third title to cross 1 billion hours viewed on Netflix within one month — a milestone that has been achieved by Squid Game and Stranger Things season 4.

The horror-comedy has also passed Ryan Murphy’s highly popular serial killer docu-series Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story to become Netflix’s second most popular English-language series of all time. The streamer measures its Most Popular list based on each title’s viewership in its first 28 days of availability; Dahmer reached 856.2 million hours in that time, while Wednesday still has one more week to climb even higher.

While it has crossed the crime thriller inevitably, the series is 352.1 million hours behind Stranger Things season 4’s performance in its first 28 days. Given that Wednesday managed to rake in 69.7 million hours during December 5-11, it seems unlikely that it will be able to beat Stranger Things for its top title among English-language TV shows.

However, the comparison is rather unfair too, given that Stranger Things has a longer runtime than Wednesday. The supernatural teen show’s season 4 runs for approximately 13 hours while the Catherine Zeta Jones-starrer runs for 6.8 hours, giving the former a significant advantage when comparing viewing hours alone.

The publication also revealed that the streamer estimated that a whopping 150 million households have viewed Wednesday, and that’s already further along than Stranger Things 4 was during its first 28 days.

Whether Wednesday beats Stranger Things or not, it is interesting to see how users love the Addams Family offshoot. The much-lauded mystery TV show follows a young goth named Wednesday Addams, played by Ortega, who joins Nevermore Academy in an effort to develop her psychic skills and investigate a crime that occurred twenty years ago.

Other than Ortega and Zeta-Jones, the star-studded show includes Gwendoline Christie, Riki Lindhome, Jamie McShane, Hunter Doohan, Percy Hynes White and many more.
