New milestone set in eroding literacy

6,000kgs of free textbooks meant for college students sold in scrap

KARACHI:

In a stark example of official apathy and insensitivity towards literacy, officials of Sindh education department in Ghotki sold textbooks, meant for free distribution among college students, as scrap.

The knowledge source was weighed at 6,000 kilogrammes at raddi or scrap paper which was around Rs25 per kilogramme.

Sindh High Court (SHC) Justice Salahuddin Panwhar taking notice of a petition filed in this regard by Abdul Wahab Advocate ordered Anti-Corruption Establishment (ACE) chairman to investigate the matter.

The petitioner further disclosed phantom funding of ghost college.

Although the provincial government has released funds for the construction of a college in Daharki town of the Ghotki district, not a single brick has been laid till date.

The said college premises has been illegally occupied, Wahab Advocate said.

The court remarked that District and Sessions Judge Ghotki should eliminate the encroachment of the college land and supervise the construction work of the college.
