After making her debut with the chart-topping global hit Pasoori, Shae Gill dropped, not one, but two tracks this winter and fans can’t keep calm. The first one is a cover of the classic wedding song Lathay Di Chadar for a brand shoot and the second, a collaboration with songwriter-singer duo Hassan and Roshan from Lahore.
The latter titled Sukoon, both for its music video and the song, became a hit amongst fans. While some people had issues with the subtle hints of queerness in the video, a majority of users wrote about how peaceful and melancholic vibes the song gives. A few users even compared Gill’s voice to the legendary Nazia Hassan after listening to the song.

Sukoon’s audio was originally out in October, but the music video was released on Friday – and it was worth the wait. Hassan and Roshan took to Instagram to share the clip and wrote, “When the director heard the song, he said the song gave him a sense of peace coupled with melancholy. Like a goldfish in a fishbowl, zindagi haseen bhi hay, tanha bhi hay [life is also beautiful, life is also lonely). A goldfish in a bowl, perhaps the prettiest, loneliest thing one could visualize.”

Another echoed the same and said, “Is Shae Gill the spiritual heir to Nazia Hassan’s disarmingly relaxed, beautiful vibe? Yes, in my opinion.”

A lot of users discovered the song after the music video. A fan wrote, “Absolutely spot on. Shae Gill never fails to amaze with what she can do with her voice.”

Another found the song, and especially Gill’s part, “beautiful” and “soothing.”

The music video features the three singers on a raft in the middle of a glistening lake where a mermaid-looking woman keeps swimming towards them, and then away. According to the singers, the woman symbolises the lonely goldfish but people think Gill’s part with her signals towards homosexuality.
A fan found the debate absurd. “Pakistanis are so funny, they really do be debating whether Shae Gill is talking to a goldfish or a l**bian in the music video," read the tweet.

Another one loved the scene and said it lives “rent-free” in their head.

While a user argued that Gill has “pretty privilege” and compared her to Momina Mustehsan.
