Men acquitted in Parveen Rahman case detained under MPO

Family members of victim say receiving death threats

KARACHI:

The Sindh government has decided not to release the alleged accused in the social worker Parveen Rahman murder case and should be detained for three months under the Maintenance of the Public Order (MPO).

Parveen Rahman’s sister and family members are receiving death threats from the accused. In view of this apprehension, the Sindh government has asked to keep the accused in prison for 90 days under the MPO Rules, 1960.

The Sindh High Court (SHC) has acquitted the accused in the Parveen Rahman murder case, however, the main accused Amjad Swati, Ayaz Swari, Ahmed Ali, M. Rahim, and Imran Swati will not be released. The court ordered to release five accused in the murder case of renowned social worker and the director Orangi Town pilot project Parveen Rahman.

She was assassinated on March 13, 2013 near Banaras when terrorists riding bikes targeted her when she was returning to her residence situated in Gulistan-e-Jauhar from office in her car with her driver Wali Dad.

Armed terrorists approached the car and shot and killed her from a close range. The police arrested main culprit Raheem Sawati along with his accomplices. It may be recalled that Parveen Rahman was involved in charitable works.
