Official reviews emergency plan finalised for snowfall season

The Rawalpindi commissioner on Wednesday directed the authorities to ensure strict implementation of the decision of the Lahore High Court regarding the Murree tragedy.

At least 23 people lost their lives due to a strong blizzard that swept through the hill resort on January 09, 2022. The initial investigation report that was made public pointed to the failure of relevant government departments in taking pre-emptive measures in light of the warnings issued by the Met Office. The probe also uncovered that measures were not taken to regulate the influx of tourists. According to a commissioner's office spokesperson, Rawalpindi Commissioner Saqib Manan held a meeting to review the Murree Emergency plan finalised for the snowfall season. The huddle was attended by the Murree and Rawalpindi deputy commissioners, the Murree Station Commander and other officers of the departments concerned.

The meeting reviewed all the arrangements finalised by the administration for the snowfall season to ensure the protection of the tourists in Murree. “All the departments concerned should fulfil their responsibilities with dedication and commitment while implementing Murree emergency plan,” the commissioner said.

A maximum of 8,000 vehicles should be allowed entry into Murree according to the traffic plan finalised for the winter season, Manan said adding, other entry routes of Murree like 'Kohala and Barrian' should also be monitored. The commissioner instructed the officers that special focus should also be given to the convenience and ease of the residents while finalizing the arrangements. All snow removal machinery should be kept operational besides arranging salt sprinkler machines and ensuring attendance of the required number and staff, he directed.

Meteorological Department should send timely forecasts to all the departments concerned and all the departments should also develop close coordination with each other to give quick responses in case of any emergency, Manan said.
