World number one Caroline Wozniacki has been given the top seed for the US Open, the last of four grand slam tennis tournaments which begins in less than a week, where she will begin her title quest with a first-round match against Polona Hercog.
American veteran Serena Williams has been seeded 28th. The 13-time Grand Slam winner has been on a hot streak but missed almost a year with injuries. Williams has three US Open titles and recently won back-to-back tournaments in Toronto and California. Her world ranking has skyrocketed from 175th 29th this week. Other notable seeds include Maria Sharapova (three), Marion Bartoli (eight) and Andrea Petkovic (10).
