Sharjeel seeks WB funding for 300 electric buses

KARACHI:

Sindh Minister for Information, Transport and Mass Transit Sharjeel Inam Memon has asked a World Bank delegation to finance 300 electric buses for the metropolitan city.

He made the proposal during a meeting on the Karachi BRT Yellow Line at his office on Thursday with a World Bank delegation comprising Practice Manager Transport Shomik Mehndiratta and Senior Transport Specialist Hassan Zaidi.

The minister added that the Sindh government was endeavouring to upgrade the public transport system along modern lines and this sector offers attractive investment opportunities for international investors, as the provincial government was willing to provide them maximum facilities.

The meeting reviewed progress on the BRT Yellow Line. On Memon's proposal, the World Bank delegation agreed to conduct a joint survey on the route of the BRT Yellow Line.

Project Director BRT Yellow Line, while briefing the delegation, said that the BRT Yellow Line would cost $438 million and a 21-kilometer dedicated corridor would be erected between Dawood Chowrangi and Numaish Chowrangi for this mass transit service.

The route would start from Dawood Chowrangi in the Korangi Industrial Area via Jam Sadiq Bridge, and pass through Main Korangi Road, FTC Interchange, Sharae Faisal, Shahrah-e-Quaideen, Kashmir Road Interchange before merging with the BRT Red Line at Numaish Chowrangi.
