Sports gala opens in Haripur Central Jail

Haripur Central Jail making every effort to transform the facility into a proper rehabilitation centre

HARIPUR:

A three-day sports gala was inaugurated in Haripur Central Jail. Haripur Deputy Commissioner Muhammad Fawad was the chief guest of the colourful event.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, the deputy commissioner said, “To make the prisons a reformatory in the true sense, it is essential to provide formal and technical education as well as sports opportunities to the prisoners.”

Fawad said the management of the Haripur Central Jail was making every effort to transform the facility into a proper rehabilitation centre.

“Sports competitions provide inmates with the chance to grow mentally and physically in addition to providing enjoyment. Programs like the sports gala for prisoners will assist in transforming the prisoners into productive members of society,” he said.

“We want to express our gratitude to the jail administration for planning such events and also in the future,” he added.

Earlier, weightlifting, volleyball and cricket competitions were also held among the teams of prisoners, in which prizes and sports equipment were distributed by the deputy commissioner and Deputy Superintendent Akhtar Hussain Shah to the winning teams and the best performing players.

Speaking at the event, the deputy superintendent said that according to the instructions of the provincial government and the IG Prisons Saadat Hassan, apart from educational facilities, the prisoners are being provided regular entertainment and sports opportunities.

“It is our endeavour that every inmate who comes out of jail becomes a breadwinner of his family and useful to the society for which technical education department is also established inside the prison,” he said.
