The Kacheri Chowk's underpass and flyover project has been given a green signal for construction as all the legal hurdles have been cleared and the issue of payment of land compensation has also been resolved.
The project is one of a kind with modern architecture and will be constructed by Frontier Works Organisation via the latest European and Chinese technology. The project will cost around Rs3.80 billion and is expected to be completed within 8 to 9 months. In this regard, Administration Rawalpindi and Chairman RDA are expected to meet Chief Minister Punjab in Lahore next week to discuss the date of commencement of the project and to invite him to put the foundation stone for the project.
Kacheri Chowk is one of the busiest intersections in Rawalpindi for VVIP movements. Moreover, the data suggest that more than 300,000 vehicles pass through this road on a daily basis such that the intersection remains busy with traffic up till midnight.
As per the altered design of the Kacheri Chowk project, one overhead bridge will divert from Kachhari Chowk towards Mall Road while the other overhead way will divert from Kachhari Chowk towards Murir Hasan. All the traffic moving back and forth from Mall Road to old Benazir Bhutto Airport is expected to be diverted and would pass through this underpass. Under the project plan, new modern computerised traffic signals will be installed, 20,000 saplings will be planted along with 15,000 flower plants and new grass will also be grown in the centre of the chowk.
