JCP picks Justice Aamer Farooq as IHC top judge

Development comes after incumbent CJ Justice Athar Minallah was elevated to the Supreme Court last week

The Judicial Commission of Pakistan (JCP) unanimously approved on Tuesday the elevation of senior puisne judge Justice Aamer Farooq as the new chief justice of the Islamabad High Court (IHC).

The JCP meeting held under the chairmanship of Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Umar Ata Bandial to consider the appointment of the new IHC chief justice. New Law Minister Sardar Ayaz Sadiq attended the meeting.

It is learnt that the JCP conducted its proceedings for hardly 10 minutes. The atmosphere of the meeting was said to be cordial. In case the Parliamentary Committee approves Justice Farooq’s nomination, he will be the IHC CJ for next nine years.

Justice Aamer Farooq will replace the incumbent Chief Justice Athar Minallah, who had been elevated to the Supreme Court by the JCP in its last meeting in October.

Meanwhile, it is also learnt that CJP Bandial has summoned a meeting of the commission on November 8 to consider the confirmation of three additional judges of the Islamabad High Court.

Chief Justice Athar Minallah has already proposed the confirmation of three additional judges of the high court. They are Justice Sardar Ejaz Ishaq Khan, Justice Arbab Muhammad Tahir and Justice Saman Rafat Imtiaz, whose one-year job tenure ends on December 13.
