MITHI:

The otherwise quaint society of the desert region of Tharparkar is plagued with recurrent suicides. Two more people ended their lives in separate incidents taking the tally to five in just a week. According to police 17-year-old Rajesh Bheel committed suicide by hanging himself from a tree in the Alamsar village. Relatives of Rajesh fail to give any information regarding reason of suicide, police said.

Moreover, 16- year-old Jhumy Bhel of the Sakro village of Islamkot also committed suicide by hanging herself from a tree. Police handover both the bodies to their relatives after legal proceedings and registering reports in the light of statements of relatives. Incidents of suicides are increasing in Tharparkar for the past many years, but government departments fail to give attention on it. Police register reports on statements of relatives only and do not make full investigations as to what drove the victim to take the extreme step, local community activists said. Social organisations also become active after any incident and hold seminars on causes behind spike in suicides, but talking on the subject is as far as they go.
