Pakistan records 49 new Covid-19 cases

Covid-19, which once nearly brought the country to a halt, has been witnessing a downward trend lately

ISLAMABAD:

Pakistan reported 49 new Covid-19 cases over the past 24 hours, the ministry of health said on Sunday.

The overall tally of infected people climbed to 1,573,690 across the country after adding the fresh cases, according to the data released by the ministry.

A total of 30,621 people have died of Covid-19 in Pakistan since the beginning of the pandemic, with no more deaths over the last 24 hours, according to the ministry's statistics.

On Saturday, 8,944 tests were conducted throughout Pakistan, whereas the positivity rate stood at 0.55 percent. There are 39 patients who are in critical condition in the country.

Covid-19, which once nearly brought the country to a halt, has been witnessing a downward trend lately. This summer, the virus resurged as the country was occupied with the devastating monsoon rains but came under control.

Pakistan’s multifaceted strategy to deal with the pandemic bore fruit as the mass vaccination campaign and targeted lockdowns in virus hotspots enabled the country to bring the epidemic under control without opting for a full-scale lockdown.

Earlier this month, this paper reported that the country had been successful in inoculating 94 percent of the population through various coronavirus vaccines. The outreach of the vaccination campaign enabled the country to lift non-pharmaceutical interventions (NPIs) and restore normalcy to public life.

The report mentioned that Sindh had almost 100 percent of its eligible population vaccinated against the virus, while Islamabad and Punjab remained 2nd and 3rd with 92 percent and 91 percent vaccination ratios. At the time, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) had vaccinated 72 percent and Balochistan has vaccinated 60 percent of their population while Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) had inoculated 65 percent of its eligible population against Covid-19.
