More than 44,000 candidates enroll for 2,450 MBBS and BDS seats

The Medical and Dental College Admission Test (MDCAT) was delayed in Sindh this year due to the devastating floods in the province, officials said, adding that the test for admission to MBBS and BDS programs in the medical and dental colleges and universities will be held on November 13.

As many as 44,118 candidates have enrolled for the MDCAT test for 2,450 seats available in the medical and dental colleges and universities of Sindh for the academic year 2022-23. According to the breakup, 1,779 candidates have enrolled in Karachi, 15,408 in Hyderabad, 8,559 in Khairpur, and 3,072 in Nawabshah.

While explaining the procedure, Member Pakistan Medical Council Jawad Amin Khan, who is also chief coordinator of examinations, told The Express Tribune that a written test will be simultaneously held in Karachi, Hyderabad, Khairpur, and Nawabshah. "In Sindh, there are 12 medical colleges, six dental colleges as well as six medical universities run by the government," he said.

About the MBBS seats available for admission, he said Dow Medical College Karachi has 350, Dow International Medical College has 150, Jinnah Sindh Medical University has 350, Liaquat Medical University Jamshoro has 350, KMD College has 250, Shaheed Benazir Bhutto Chandka Medical College Larkana has 250, People's Women Nawabshah Medical College has 250, Khairpur Medical College has 100, Shaheed Benazir Bhutto Lyari Medical College has 100, Ghulam Muhammad Mehar Medical College Sukkur has 100, Gambat Medical College has 100, while Bilal Medical College for Boys has 100 seats.

According to Khan, an agreement has been reached amongst the public sector medical institutions for the admission test and all arrangements have been completed for this purpose. The written entrance test will be held on the same day under a uniform policy, he added.

Khan said that the MDCAT written test fees would be Rs. 6,000 as Federal Health Minister Qadir Patel has urged the Pakistan Medical Council to consider lowering the fees to minimise financial burden on aspirants. The test results will be published on the website within three days, he said, adding that the MBBS and BDS academic session would begin in January 2023.
