Minister launches campaign against cholera

Vaccination to be undertaken in seven hardest-hit districts

PESHAWAR:

Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) Law Minister Fazal Shakoor inaugurated a campaign against cholera in Charsadda, which will cover seven worst hit districts across the province.

District Health Officer (DHO) Dr Farhad, along with other officials, also attended the event.

The minister said that vaccination is mandatory for everyone older than one year, stressing that precautions are crucial to the prevention of the disease. He said that vaccination will continue from October 10 to October 14 in seven identified districts across the province.

The campaign will be conducted in 13 union councils of K-P. “The percentage of this disease is more in the selected districts than the rest of the province,” the DHO said.

He added that this disease is spread through contaminated water and bacteria, which enters the body through food.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) is providing technical and monetary support to the campaign, Fazal added.

Cholera, the doctor cautioned, is a life-threatening disease which can be controlled through vaccination that is necessary for every man, woman and child above the age of one year.

According to health department, roughly four lakh people will be administered this vaccine and the district administration and health department officials will oversee this campaign on a daily basis.
