HRCP calls to end death penalty

A rally of the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) has called for the abolition of the death penalty, arguing that civilised societies have done away with such forms of extreme punishment for crimes.

Addressing the rally, which was organised to mark world day against the death penalty, HRCP’s Imdad Chandio contended that only the weak people were subjected to the death penalty.

Chandio said the death penalty also denied the right to life enshrined in the constitution. He believed such a punishment resulted in a perpetual cycle of violence.

He lamented that the police killed or injured suspected criminals in the staged encounters, which was a blatant violation of the law and an intolerable act of human rights violation.
