Murder Of Mqm Man: Last Afaq case adjourned again

Afaq's petition to be heard on August 26.

KARACHI:

The Sindh High Court adjourned on Tuesday till August 26 the hearing of an application filed by Afaq Ahmed, the chief of his own faction of the Mohajir Qaumi Movement (Haqiqi). He has asked the court to quash the proceedings against him in the murder case of a worker of the rival Muttahida Qaumi Movement.

Justice Muhammad Tasnim adjourned the hearing when Assistant Prosecutor General Zafar Ahmed Khan requested more time.

Through his lawyer Muhammad Ilyas Khan, Afaq Ahmed submitted that he has been in jail since April 2004 but he was still booked in a number of new cases as an abettor over the last couple of years at the behest of the rival party.

He contended that the fresh cases lodged against him on political grounds had no evidence. He was put on trial in a case registered against him at the Nabi Bux police station in which the trial court had dismissed his bail and acquittal applications.

According to the prosecution, complainant Shadzad lodged an FIR (No 222/09) under sections 302, 324, 109 and 34 of the Pakistan Penal Code, alleging that some workers of the MQM-H killed his brother Atiq-ur Rehman and wounded him in June 2009 at the behest of Afaq Ahmed.

Afaq’s counsel contended that the prosecution had no solid evidence to link him to this case, which was lodged in June 2009 when he was in prison. SHC Justice Muhammad Tasnim adjourned the hearing till August 26.
