Police arrest three suspects for forcing mentally challenged persons into begging

Rawalpindi police on Monday rescued four mentally-challenged persons including a woman from illegal detention and arrested three more suspects for forcing the special persons into bagging in the garrison city.

The mentally challenged rescued persons were identified as Hayat, Rashid, Murtaza and Fatima. Earlier, the Ganjmandi police arrested a suspect and recovered begging proceeds from him after videos showing special persons being tortured and forced into begging went viral in Rawalpindi.

In the videos, the suspects could be seen forcing mentally challenged people into begging and later torturing them for failing to fetch the required sum. Khadim Hussain, the ringleader of the begging gang, has already been arrested by the police.

On Monday, Ganjmandi police apprehended three other members of the gang who were identified as Asif, Zafar and Shahid, who were forcing mentally challenged persons into begging. The accused used to force mentally challenged people to beg in various parts of the city.

A video showing ringleader Khadim Hussain torturing the mentally challenged persons went viral earlier. After the video went viral, police arrested the ringleader of the gang and recovered Rs27,000 from him. Rawalpindi City Police Officer Shahzad Nadeem Bukhari said that the brutal act of the accused has humiliated humanity.

The accused will receive a harsh punishment and no stone will be left unturned to arrest other members of the gang. He said that citizens should keep an eye on such activities and report such incidents to the police.
