Lahore Premier League to launch today
LAHORE:
The Lahore City Cricket Asso-ciation (LCCA) has launched an 18-team Lahore Premier League (LPL) to revive the club cricket culture in the city and to discover new talent for the national team.
The LPL, the city’s first-class 50-over league to kick-off today, will have each team play eight matches over 25 days across 13 venues in the city with the final of the tournament to be played at Gaddafi Stadium. The LCCA also announced Rs100,000 as prize-money for the winners with the runners-up being awarded Rs50,000.
Khawaja Nadeem, the LCCA’s newly-appointed president, has pledged to revive the old culture of club cricket in Lahore, one which he believes has been lost in the last decade.
“The idea behind the league is to bring back the lost culture of club cricket and set new standards,” he said. “The players, who performed in the inter-district tournament, have been picked with 30 as the age limit.
However, we’ve also included star attractions including Mohammad Yousuf to jazz up the event.”
The LPL will be a franchise-model where corporates and sponsors are allowed to buy and finance the teams.
