Rape, particularly committed by relatives, is unfortunately common within Punjab. In August 2017, a victim came forward alleging that she had been raped by her own father. According to the victim, the assaults had occurred since she was 13.
The victim was faced with family members who did not believe the allegations and death threats from the father whenever he was caught assaulting his daughter.
The victim’s mother reportedly caught the father red-handed when he was tried to force himself on her. The mother tried to stop the suspect, but he badly thrashed her and kept a knife on her neck, threatening to kill her and the victim.
In an effort to stop the assaults, the mother and her sons registered an FIR with the police. A DNA analysis found that the father had been committing the assaults, leading to his arrest.
In a separate incident in January of this year, a minor girl was allegedly sexually assaulted for five months in Tahir Kalan village on the outskirts of Okara. Police arrested the suspect, the complainant’s brother-in-law Riaz, on a complaint lodged by the victim’s father.
Reportedly, the 11-year-old victim was living with the suspect. The complainant told police that he got married for the second time in 2017 to Yasmeen and that he and his 11-year-old daughter were living with his in-laws.
He added that a few months later, his mother- in-law and brother-in-law, Riaz, kicked him out of the house. Meanwhile, the suspect Riaz started sexually assaulting his daughter in his absence, the complainant alleged.
Basirpur police arrested Riaz after performing a medical examination on the victim and registered a case against on charges of raping the minor. Police said they were investigating the matter further.
