The local leader of the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (F) and tehsil mayor of Tank, Saddam Hussain Betni, escaped unhurt from an attack that killed four of his bodyguards and injured two on Friday.

The incident took place when unknown attackers ambushed Betni’s convoy on the way from Pai village to Dera Ismail Khan and unleashed ‘indiscriminate’ firing at them. The JUI-F leader was returning from his tour to flood-hit village of Pai.

Four of his security guards – Imran Khan, Barkatullah, Fazlur Rehman and Rafiullah – died on the spot, while two others sustained injuries.

Meanwhile, as soon as the news of the failed assassination attempt reached the citizens, calls were given through mosques' loudspeakers to be on the lookout, prompting some people to shoot at the attackers as soon as they saw them.

However, sources said that the attackers were successful in escaping in the darkness of the night.
