Provincial Health Minister Dr Yasmin Rashid has inaugurated the first training centre of Punjab for doctors and midwives of mother and child hospitals.
World Health Organisation Country Head Dr Palitha Mahipala accompanied Dr Rashid at the inauguration ceremony in the Gynaecology Department of the Services Hospital.
The provincial minister said on the occasion that the country is a signatory to the Sustainable Development Goals related to reducing maternal and child mortality rates. She said the unique centre would provide modern training to doctors and midwives of mother and child hospitals in the province.
She said all measures were being taken to ensure the health of mother and child in Punjab, including construction of hospitals for the purpose in accordance with the vision of former prime minister Imran Khan.
The minister said the lives of the mother and child were put at risk due to delivery at home.
She said more than 1,300 basic health units in Punjab had been made operational round the clock. Midwives are also deputed at the healthcare centres.
The provincial minister said 480 ambulances were providing services to ensure the health of mothers and children in Punjab.
The World Health Organisation has always cooperated in providing better health facilities to the people, she said. “In view of the increasing population, we have to take urgent measures to ensure the health of the mother and child,” Dr Rashid added.
The WHO country head said the organisation had been a part of the government’s efforts to provide better health facilities to the people and it would always cooperate with Punjab.
