Ranbir faces criticism after poking fun at Alia's weight

A comment by Ranbir directed at Alia during a promotional event for 'Brahmastra' has left fans uncomfortable

All eyes are on the newly-wed couple Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt as they promote their upcoming film Brahmastra. The couple, who tied the knot in an intimate ceremony in April this year, gathered a large fan following in support of their relationship. Soon after, fans were overjoyed when they announced they are expecting their first baby. However, a recent comment by Ranbir during a promotional event for the film, directed towards his wife, actor and mother-to-be, has left fans uncomfortable.

The incident took place during a live session on social media, joined by director-writer Ayan Mukerji. Fans took the opportunity to inquire about the promotional plans for the upcoming trilogy film. As Alia responded that they haven’t yet “phailed [spread]” the film but will do so, Ranbir interrupted the Gangubai Kathiawadi star to quip that someone had “phailoed” instead, a jab at her growing baby bump.

In a video clip showing the moment that has now gone viral, Alia can be seen visibly unsettled after Ranbir’s comment. She quickly diverted the conversation back to the film, elevating the awkward tension. However, this moment from the event has many social media users accusing Ranbir of body-shaming. One user pointed out Ranbir’s “height of entitlement” while others stated a pregnant woman’s weight should never be pointed out. However, some supported Ranbir, chalking up his comment to being good-humoured and “behaving as a normal husband and wife do.”

Brahmastra Part One: Shiva, also starring Amitabh Bachchan, Mouni Roy, and South actor Nagarjuna Akkineni in prominent roles, is scheduled to be released on 9 September.
