PESHAWAR:

Four people have lost their lives in heavy downpour and subsequent flash floods in Dera Ismail Khan district of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P).

As per the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) 10 houses were destroyed and around 13 people were injured. As many as 33 houses were also damaged across the province.

Local residents claimed that hundreds of mud houses had been damaged and dozens of people injured.

An official told The Express Tribune that in recent rains DI Khan was among the hardest hit as an emergency has been declared in the district. Rescue 1122, district administration and emergency services have been put on alert.

He said that 66mm rain was recorded in the district which caused widespread destruction in Teshil Porwa, Daraban and Karai Shamozai.

“A five-year-old child was killed when he slipped into a nullah in the Liaqatabad area. His body was fished out and handed over to the family,” he said, adding that an elderly bike rider died after falling from his two-wheeler due to flooded road in Bannu. His identity was yet to be established.

In Kari Shamozai dozens of villages have been flooded.

In Darazinda and Maddi village two people were killed in roof collapse incidents.

Similarly, in Kot Easa Khan dozens of villagers were left stranded on the roof of their houses when water entered the village and all the residents were shifted to safe places through boats by Rescue 1122.

In Himat Adda a roof collapsed during rainfall leaving four injured who were rescued and shifted to hospital.

Dewatering has been in progress in Teshil Kulachi in Dera.

On the other hand, K-P Chief Minister Mahmood Khan has directed the authorities to scale up relief activities in the district and expressed his sorrow over the death of three people in flooding in the province.

He ordered all the districts to be on alert due to the threat of heavy urban flooding.

He said that the flood victims will not be left under the open sky and they will be provided all possible help.

Meanwhile flooding turned Tank district into a lagoon after heavy downpour causing problems for the local population.

The district received heavy rainfall at night which resulted in the flooding of low-lying areas but neither district administration nor Rescue 1122 teams were available to help them.

Locals blamed that there is no system to clean the nullahs in the city. As a result, all the sewerage lines overflowed after the rains.

Local residents tried to help those people whose houses were damaged by the rainfall and shifted them to safe places.

Dozens of roofs and walls collapsed in the area.
