ISLAMABAD:

Federal Minister for Climate Change Sherry Rehman has claimed that a “massive corruption” has been detected in the Billion Tree Tsunami project launched by the previous PTI government.

In an off-the-cuff interaction with the media, the federal minister shared that an audit of the BTT project was underway with around 14 cases of alleged corruption, adding the government will not block funds to any other province for the sake of the afforestation project.

Sharing details of the damages caused by the recent torrential rains and floods, Rehman said that over 639 people have died and 1016 people have been injured, while more than 100,000 kilometres of roads have been destroyed by the devastating rains.

She feared that the food supplies to the flood-impacted will be badly affected due to unseasonal rains and added that Pakistan was reeling from the climate change crisis.

The incidents of glacial lake bursting have increased three times, she added.

The federal minister said that due to environmental changes, food security, public health and water resources were under threat.
