MoU inked for developing marble, granite sector

Assistance will be provided to investors for boosting exports of marble, granite products

ISLAMABAD:

he Islamabad Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ICCI) and the Pakistan Stone Development Company (Pasdec) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the objective of promoting trade in dimensional stone (marble, granite and onyx).

They will work for the mutual benefit of public and private sectors and help develop the marble and granite sector as well as enhance its exports.

ICCI President Muhammad Shakeel Munir and Pasdec CEO Brigadier Babar Miraj Shami signed the MoU.

According to the MoU, Pasdec will provide technical support to the marble sector for planning, development and execution of mechanised mining and processing facilities to facilitate better growth.

It will also provide technical assistance to the investors and business community for boosting exports of marble and granite products.

Pasdec, in collaboration with the federal government, will make efforts for the establishment of marble cities, machinery pool warehouses and other projects.

Pasdec and the ICCI will work for the development of marble and granite sector strategy and submit proposals to the government.

Pasdec will conduct a geo-technical study and provide machinery on rent or lease to the business community to facilitate the local dimensional stone mining industry.

The two organisations will train labour for the dimensional stone industry and provide technical assistance to the business sector concerned for skill development.

Munir said that the marble sector had great potential to grow and enhance exports of the country. He called the MoU between the ICCI and Pasdec a positive step towards harnessing the actual potential of the marble sector for better economic growth.
