'Darlings' trailer: Abused Alia Bhatt kidnaps husband to take revenge

Dark comedy sees Bhatt in a pivotal role who vows to get back at Vijay Varma with the help of her mother, Shefali Shah

Indian actor Alia Bhatt has finally ventured into production and her first project looks promising, to say the least. Bhatt is all set to release her first-ever production, Darlings, on Netflix next month. Touted as a dark comedy, Darlings sees the Gangubai Kathiawadi star as Badrunnisa Shaikh, who is married to Hamza Shaikh, played by Vijay Varma.

In the recently released trailer, we see Bhatt as a victim of domestic violence and has vowed to take revenge on her husband by kidnapping him with the help of her mother, essayed by Shefali Shah. The two-and-a-half-minute trailer is engaging as we see Varma sharing that he is leaving his wife, even though he loves her dearly. We then see a sultry Bhatt, who tries to seduce her husband but ends up failing miserably once she comes face to face with her aging neighbour instead.

She then goes to the police station with her mother to file a missing person report for Hamza. But Badru and her mother's story don't match, which piques the interest of the police as well. The audience then sees several flashbacks and the truth behind Hamza and Badru's troublesome marriage. Stuck in a physically and emotionally abusive marriage, Badru seeks revenge from her husband by kidnapping her. "I will treat him the same way he had treated me," she tells her mother in the trailer as she gets back to her husband.

Helmed by debutant director Jasmeet K Reen, the music score for the film is composed by filmmaker-composer Vishal Bhardwaj. Darlings, co-produced with Shah Rukh Khan’s Red Chillies Entertainment, marks Bhatt’s second collaboration with King Khan after Dear Zindagi.

But this is not all that Bhatt will surprise us with this year. On the work front, she has a girl's travelogue, Jee Le Zaraa with Priyanka Chopra and Katrina Kaif, directed by Farhan Akhtar along with Ayan Mukherjee’s Brahmastra featuring her husband Ranbir Kapoor. The Gully Boy actor is also shooting for her Hollywood debut with Gal Gadot in Heart of Stone.
