Minecraft to ban NFTs on game servers

Minecraft developer bans NFTs from game servers saying it encouraged profiteering and diverted focus off the game

Minecraft developer, Mojang, has decided to ban NFTs from the popular game as the studio sees NFTs as running counter to the "spirit of Minecraft".

The studio came up with upcoming changes to the game, all relating to NFTs, aiming to ultimately ban blockchain technology from the game servers. NFTs were being independently run by fans and creators playing the game, who were also using Minecraft imagery to create NFT projects.

The post regarding the announcement and changes stated that "to ensure that Minecraft players have a safe and inclusive experience, blockchain technologies are not permitted to be integrated inside our client and server applications, nor may Minecraft in-game content such as worlds, skins, persona items, or other mods, be utilized by blockchain technology to create a scarce digital asset".

The studio believed that "the speculative pricing and investment mentality around NFTs" was diverting focus from the game and was encouraging profit-making on the platform.

According to Mojang, the game servers were allowing the use of NFTs that represent in-game items or have NFT rewards for players, additionally turning Minecraft assets into NFT collectables.

NFT Worlds tweeted that they were deeply concerned about the issue and were working to figure out other options even if it requires a "pivot".
