Elahi files contempt plea in SC against Hamza

Requests apex court to punish Punjab CM, Rana Sanaullah, Marriyum Aurangzeb

Punjab Assembly Speaker Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi moved the Supreme Court on Tuesday seeking contempt of court proceeding against Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah, Information Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb and Punjab Chief Minister Hamza Shehbaz.

Citing a threatening statement from the interior minister, the Elahi requested the court to summon Rana Sanaullah, Hamza Shehbaz, Maryam Aurangzeb and punish them for disobeying the order of the Supreme court.

The petition that Elahi and his allies were in comfortable position to form the government in Punjab following by-election on the 20 vacant seats, adding that in pursuant to the apex court orders, preparation were under way for the election of the chief minister.

"The respondents after losing the majority in the house have become unnerved and showing extreme anger and frustration,” the petition said, adding that Chief Minister Hamza Shehbaz had threatened to remove PTI members and its allies.

Similarly, the petition further stated, the recent statement of the interior minister also interfered with the process of the implementation of the court’s order, amounting to creating constitutional vacuum, depriving the citizens of Punjab of due representation and governance.

“The threatening statements by the incumbent Interior Minister has caused great fear and hostility towards members of the allied parties,” the petition stated. “The alleged contemnor may kindly be summoned, prosecuted and awarded punishment for violating the order.”
