Climbing uphill on a bicycle is one of the most fulfilling experiences of life. Cyclists truly appreciate the thrill and freedom afforded by lofty mountains and challenging terrain. Fitness freak Zehra Gillani who owns Juicery, takes us through iconic locales across north Pakistan on a cycle.

How was your experience holidaying up north?

It was my first trip to Hunza and that too on a cycle in the mountains. It was truly magical. Cycling in the mountainous region helped me build focus and gave me a sense of pride to see the nature that we belong from. Pakistan is so beautiful and I often wonder why we must spend an exorbitant amount to visit other mountainous areas in the world. I always felt that the best way to see a place is while riding a cycle.

What places did you visit up north?

We as a group went to Naraan, Babusar Top, Chilas, Aliabad, Attabad, Passu Cones, Hoper Glacier, Eagles Nest and Lady Finger. All destinations offer the most spectacular sceneries and are stunning. Pakistan has some of the most beautiful northern areas in the world.

How was cycling across the northern areas a rewarding experience?

Cycling in the mountains is a whole new experience compared to city biking. The Uphill region is very challenging but equally rewarding and satisfying to the mind and soul.

What are some of the bigger challenging one encounter while cycling uphill?

A 20km uphill bike ride feels like 50km. The steep incline terrain was never ending. The tunnels that we rode through in Atabad were very challenging. They were pitching dark, the cars passing by on full speed would blow their horns in appreciation of our efforts but that was very disturbing. Tunnel 2 and 3 were also very long.

What sort of physical preparation does cycling in the mountains entail?

Physically one has to be pretty fit. I go to the gym every day, lift weights and do some cardio. If the weather permits I am found cycling around Lahore.

What was your fuel for the ride?

A protein shakes before the ride and water for hydration during the ride.

Was descending a mountain pass a daunting experience?

Descending down the mountain was thrilling. One has to keep a check on the speed as it’s very easy to let go and fly down. Chances of an accident are also fairly high and if it’s raining one can also slip.

Any unexpected hurdle during the trip?

It was a smooth ride over all. Coming down Babusar Top to Chilas it started to rain but by the time we were down 41km we also managed to dry up!

Would you like to share any tips for both aspiring to follow in your footsteps?

You have to be a regular cyclist to be able to cycle in the mountainous terrain. However one can try cycling in the flatter belts and have a car follow you. Always check your brakes and the air pressure in the tires too. It’s about time we explore and encourage travelers around the world to come, experience and admire the scenic beauty of Pakistan.
