Islam gives women rights, Muslim men don’t, says Armeena Khan

Actor sets the record straight about ‘freedom’ Muslim women exercise

Armeena Khan, who proactively talks about social issues on her Twitter, recently shared CNN presenter Becky Anderson’s video, in which she talks about the recent, gutwrenching murders of three Arab women. Anderson shared a segment from her show CNN Connect, to inform her followers about the killing of Naira Ashraf, Iman Rashid and Lubna Mansour.

Retweeting her post, Khan wrote, “This is what happens when you allow women to become second class citizens. Beings that men can own, possess and discard at will. This will not do.” A follower replied to the actor saying, “That is why Islam gives women the most freedom and respect.”

To this, Khan retorted, “Islam does but Muslim men don’t allow for those rights to be passed on to women, so they are still deprived. And you only have to look at all the gender-based violence as evidence.” The Janaan actor does not hesitate from confronting with her followers and sometimes, it is imperative to not look the other way.

News of the Arab women in discussion made headlines recently, particularly because of the reasons for which they were killed. Naira, who was studying to become a flight attendant in Egypt, got stabbed outside her university by a man she refused to marry. Iman Rashid was shot and killed in her university for reasons unknown. The killer then shot himself. Lubna was fatally stabbed to death in her car. The man who killed her was allegedly her husband, and he cited “personal differences” as a reason for committing the murder.
