KARACHI:

In order to minimise the impact of imported fuel on the national economy, it is necessary to take advantage of the potential of exporting coal from Thar, and by using the environment-friendly methods to generate electricity from coal at the local level.

These views were expressed by environmentalists and experts in the field of engineering during a seminar jointly organised by Citizens for Environment under the Institute of Engineers Pakistan.

The seminar reviewed the prospects and challenges of coal-powered generation as well as the impact on the environment.

Experts say, if coal is used efficiently and safely as a fuel, the environmental impact can be limited. Pakistan can use Thar coal for other sectors including energy, petrochemicals, liquid fuel production which will help in stabilising the country economically.

Highlighting the coal reserves in Thar and their economic usefulness, the experts participating in the seminar said that the government has earmarked 12 blocks of 100sq. km. area so that investors can invest in these blocks and utilise the coal reserves. The volume of underground coal reserves in Thar is estimated at 185 billion tonnes, valued at $25,000 billion. This precious treasure could play an important role in resolving the serious energy crisis the country is currently facing.

Addressing the seminar, Zeeshan Liaquat, Head of Pakistan International Bulk Terminal, Commercial, said that PIBT is the only terminal built to handle specific cargo with all the latest technology and equipment required for handling coal in accordance with international standards.

Rebirth | 2 years ago | Reply The Ukraine war is causing Europeans to consider alternate energy supplies and the Russians are also likely to block the energy pipelines and supplies that haven t yet been sanctioned or stopped with inside support in some cases . This means that the demand for coal in Europe has increased dramatically. Pakistan should consider exporting Thar coal at very cheap prices to gain a foothold in the European market because LNG terminals and refineries for alternate countries crude oil aren t going to be built overnight. Europe needs our help and it needs it now Especially in the upcoming winter. The Paris Climate Accord laid out demands for countries to invest in renewables but in the short winter days that last for months or in the case of Northern Europe where there s no sun for half a year it s not at all practical or feasible. The Indians and Chinese already got their exemptions during the pandemic for coal. Time for us to flood the world energy markets with Thar coal. 25 trillion dollars worth of coal is the kind of abundance that should benefit mankind. Or at least the lighter European version of mankind for the next couple of years. We can export it to them by train. I believe the plan to transport Thar coal upcountry via train was on the cards. From there it can be transported to Istanbul from Islamabad via train. That track has become functional again. Let s call this the Melt the Coal initiative to rival the Belt and Road initiative. We will welcome any investment from the recently announced G7 fund to counter the BRI. I believe it s 600 billion so we will take 1 or 2 of that for this purpose. Invest in your heating. Invest in coal It can t possibly be any dirtier than your minds can it
