Behind the Scenes band? Fahad Mustafa sparks furore for dismissing his daughter’s love for BTS

Actor, alongside Mahira Khan called out for ignorance about K-pop industry

With Eidul Azha around the corner, countdown has begun for the cinematic release of Quaid-e-Azam Zindabad, featuring superstars Mahira Khan and Fahad Mustafa. During promotions for the film, the actors weighed in on their love for old school romance, Kishore Kumar and Muhammad Rafi’s vocals, their reasons to do the script and their dislike – or rather ignorance for the booming Korean entertainment industry.

In conversation with Fuschia, Mustafa talked about his relationship with his children. The Load Wedding actor revealed that while his son follows him “without a purpose” to get his attention, his daughter Fatima “doesn't really care [about him] anymore because she's 11 now.” Disappointed with Fatima’s diehard love for K-pop, he added, “Fatima is a BTS fan so she doesn't care."

It also turns out that Mustafa has actually never heard the sensational South Korean boy band’s music. In fact, he exclaimed a firm “no, hell no” when asked about it. Calling it his choice, the Jeeto Pakistan host shared that he doesn’t even know his daughter’s favourite song by the band.

"I used to call them Behind The Scenes band and she responded with 'no papa!’ It's...I don't know Bangtan So tol something, I don't know. She speaks Korean, she doesn't speak Sindhi, what is wrong with these people?” lamented the actor, emphasising on how he’d rather want her speaking her mother tongue.

Khan, as clueless as Mustafa about the Korean entertainment industry, added that it is indeed a "big thing" amongst teenagers. “Especially K dramas, although I haven’t seen any of them.”

Fans of the band, known as ARMY, took to Twitter to call out the actors, specially Mustafa for “embarrassing” his daughter like that. One user suggested that the actor must research about K-pop and why "everyone is so in love with their content.”

While another said he should "at least respect" his daughter and her choices. "Making her feel guilty and inferior in front of the whole media and making fun of her choices is just so ridiculous," they wrote.

With the cool persona that Mustafa carries, a tweep penned that Mustafa was "the last" person they imagined BTS fans would "cancel.”

But for most people, it came down to disrespecting a craft that they indulge in themselves for being in a different language. One user took a dig at the actor for making shows about false accusations instead of thinking what about Korean pop culture is so appealing and why it attracted his child to the extent that she's learning a new language.

Moving on to the music that they actually like, it is a known fact that Khan lives in a world of literature and old school nostalgia. While the Superstar actor shared that she’s a fan of Muhammad Rafi’s voice, Mustafa revealed that he actually isn’t a fan of Rafi but swears by Kishore Kumar’s songs.

Upon asking why the duo signed up for the film, Mustafa straight up said because “I was the hero. There are barely any heroes in Nabeel’s [Qureshi] films.” Khan added that while she chose the project for its unique “script and storyline,” it was actually about time that she worked with these three people. “I wanted to experience Nabeel, Fiza, Fahad. I really wanted to.”

The action packed film’s trailer sees Mustafa doing many stunts on screen. Talking about them, he revealed that he performed those himself and as a consequence, injured himself a lot too. “Everything you see in the film, I’ve done it myself. I still carry the injury with me so much so that I can only wear a certain pair of shoes and nothing else. But thank God, everything that we have shot, it was all worth it and I hope people feel that too.”

Speaking about a motorcycle scene, he recalled that he actually swore of biking after last year, he “accidentally” slept on the highway while riding a heavy motorcycle. “But those two three months of riding bikes helped me in this film. I rode all kinds of motorbikes in this film– from the cheapest models to then the heavier ones. Vasay Chaudhry actually calls me “ghareebon ka hero [Hero for everyone]” and so when I came out of a fancy car in Jawaani Phir Nahi Ani, he told me ‘maza nahi aya’ [It wasn’t that fun]’”

Mustafa also went on to lament that there’s a problem with supporting cast in this entertainment industry. “People think it's all fun and games. They’ll come, see Mahira and me, have fun and leave. But it doesn’t work that way. You’ve to work. Supporting cast can actually make or break the film.”

Khan added that these challenges are the reason that unions should happen. “It’s important where junior artists, and supporting casts know that they are getting paid by the end of the day and then they sit and understand the work better.”

It wasn’t just Mustafa who rode a bike in the film, by the way. Khan also rode a vespa but she revealed that she first learnt to ride a bike. “Riding a bike was actually more fun than a vespa. It wasn’t actually difficult but with Fahad on my back, he used to tease me so much.” The Raees actor wished that she would’ve gotten a chance to ride an actual bike in the film than a scooty.

“Insha Allah in the sequel,” chuckled Mustafa.
