Rebuilding the province: ADB to release funds for development work
$405 million have been allocated for reconstruction of the irrigation system.

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) will send Rs3.5 billion by the end of August for development in the province, announced Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah on Saturday after a meeting at Chief Minister House.
Additional chief secretary for planning and development Muhammad Ishaque Lashari briefed the chief minister about the ADB support for several schemes under the small cities improvement programme.
Eight hundred kilometres of roads, damaged during the floods last year, are being reconstructed. A project worth 405 million dollars has also been launched for the reconstruction and repair of the irrigation system which was destroyed completely. The river embankments, canal paths and other irrigation networks are being repaired while problems of the coastal areas are being looked after by the Sindh Coastal Development Authority.
The chief minister said that the projects under Sindh Cities Improvement Programme will be implemented early. The water supply system will be renovated and technology for drainage projects will be enhanced.
The country director of the ADB, Werner Liepech, assured that bank will support the programmes under the approved projects. Shah appreciated the cooperation of the ADB and said that proper monitoring of projects will be ensured by the government.
The deputy country director of the bank, Nienshen Zhang, senior pogramme specialist, Mian Shaukat Isaf, and chief economist Dr Qazi Masood were also present in the meeting.
