Tree plantation should be made mandatory, says Karachi administrator
On the occasion of World Environment Day, Sindh Environmental Protection Agency organized a seminar, stage drama, and live music show.
Earlier, SEPA organized two-cycle rallies, one from the FTC Building and another one from Sakhi Hassan Intersection. Both concluded at Mazar-e-Quaid Azam. SEPA organized the environment day activities in collaboration with Farozaan Pakistan and Engro on Sunday.
An awareness seminar was held at Arts Council of Pakistan Karachi in which Chief Guest was Sindh Minister for Environment, Climate Change and Coastal Development Muhammad Ismail Rahoo, who in his keynote address said that all types of pollution are equally hazardous but water and air pollution directly affect the environment and human health.
Rahoo said that industrialized nations polluted their environment in the beginning but later on they adopted mitigation measures to contain it within limits.
However, developing nations like ours have to do a lot to ensure environmental safety both at industrial and civic levels.
Renowned environmentalist Shahid Lutfi said, "our world offers unlimited opportunities to make it a paradise on earth but the short-sightedness of human beings has made them counterproductive.
" Instead of thinking in the long term human beings are running for short-term gains and this approach has converted the strength of planet Earth into weaknesses.
The living legend of the health sector of Pakistan Dr Tipu Sultan said that water pollution is one of the most harmful kinds of pollution.
Later a Stage Drama entitled "it is difficult to breathe" (Saans Lena Mohaal) was presented highlighting the issues related to air pollution.
The theme, story, and dramatization of the play put a deep impact on the audience and it received thunderous applause from them.
Later on, the Festival was concluded with a live music show by Auj Band which played live songs mostly related to the environment and other social issues.
Famous cricket analyst and former cricketer Sikandar Bakht and senior TV artist Farhan Ali Agha were conspicuous by their presence.
During the week from 30th May 2022 to 5th June 2022 SEPA also organized a training workshop on climate change reporting jointly with Green Media Initiative at Karachi Press Club.
WED at Hill Park Administrator Karachi Murtaza Wahab on Sunday while addressing a WED function at Hill Park said the legislation is needed to make tree planting mandatory.
"Planting and cultivating trees must be made mandatory when permitting domestic and industrial constructions.
Members of Provincial Assembly Sharmila Farooqi, Sadia Javed, PPP leader Moazzam Qureshi, Taimur Mehar, Kati President Salman Aslam, former President Farhan-ur-Rehman, Junaid Naqi, Director General Parks Junaidullah Khan and other officials were also present on the occasion.
While a large number of government school children also attended the environmental event.
Administrator Karachi said almost all the citizens of Karachi have pleasant memories associated with Hill Park, however, the eyes of the land mafia are always fixed on it.
He said that thousands of people flock to Hill Park with their families for recreation.
