Creative ventures: Five artists, five weeks in a house
Work produced during confinement will be displayed in an exhibition.

Five artists will be confined for more than five weeks at a house in Lahore and the body of work they produce will be displayed at an exhibition.
The Taza Tareen Residency, an initiative of the Vasl Artists’ Collective, will bring together artists from different areas and backgrounds under one roof from October 24 to November 30.
The idea is to let them discuss different ideas and produce art work based on these discussions, Vasal Artists’ Collective project co-coordinator Asad Hayee said.
He said several such residencies had been held in Karachi over the last 10 years but this would be the first in Lahore.
The Vasl Artists’ Collective has sought applications along with images of 12 recent works from art graduates.
Hayee said artists nowadays did not have many avenues to interact with one another. Earlier, he said, there were places like Pak Tea House where artists, poets and intellectuals could congregate and hold discussions on various topics. He added that many had produced great art and literary works after getting inspirations from those lively debates. Hayee said they planned to invite notable artists and writers to come over to the house and hold sessions with the five residents. He said so far they had shortlisted Saliman Hashmi, Naazish Ata-Ullah and Dr Arifa.
Others meeting and holding discussions with the residents would be members of the Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) Literary Society and graduates of the National College of Arts (NCA), Beaconhouse National University, Indus Valley School Karachi and NCA Rawalpindi. He hoped the residents would be inspired by the visitors. Hayee said such residences were being organised regularly in SAARC countries such as India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.
The residents will get a daily stipend and their travelling and boarding expenses will also be covered by the organiser. A house has already been selected near Kalma Chowk with a studio for the residents to work in. Hayee said during the stay the residents would be taken to various art institutions and historical places like the Wagha border crossing and Lahore Fort.
The deadline for submission of applications for the residency is September 20, 2011.
